High school football players of Rockwall-Heath, in Texas were forced to do nearly 400 push-ups without a water break with resultant medical condition. Dr Osehotue Okojie, a parent of one student who had to go hospital narrates her son’s ordeal to the BBC.
She said that her son came home from an off-season training in pain and was unable to lift his arms. He was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a medical condition that involves the breakdown of muscle tissue that causes the releases of a damaging protein into the blood. Rhabdomyolysis she said ‘is usually from overuse, and it’s not common’.
Another parent also narrates similar experience of pain and stiffness. Investigations have commenced following appeal by parents. In the meantime, the school’s football coach, John Harrell, has been placed on leave.
