India overtakes China, now world’s most populous nation

India is now the world’s “most populous” nation, data released by the United Nations has revealed. 

With 1.4286 billion people, the nation has just barely surpassed China, which had 1.4257 billion people. However, China’s population figures did not include Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, or its special administrative territories of Hong Kong and Macau.

India’s population is under 30 years old, according to the UN’s World Population dashboard’s forecasts for mid-2023.

In the upcoming years, the country’s economy will grow at the fastest rate among all major economies.

In order to accommodate the millions of individuals entering the workforce as the country transitions away from agriculture labor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration will have an increased urgency to create jobs.

Since 1974, India has had faster population increase than China.

More people reside in the third-largest economy in Asia than live in all of Europe, Africa, or the Americas combined.

India seized the top spot as it added about 23 million babies in 2022, while China’s population started shrinking for the first time in six decades, with about 9.56 million newborns last year.
