DSP arraigned for defrauding businessman of N128m

A Deputy Superintendent of Police, Jerry Ogunsakin, was on Thursday arraigned before the Federal High Court, in Lagos for alleged unlawful conversion of N128m.

The Special Fraud Unit has filed three charges against the defendant: conspiracy, acquiring under false pretenses, and unlawful conversion.

Justice Chukwuejekwu Aneke was informed by the police prosecutor, Chukwu Agwu, that the defendant committed the crimes on November 15, 2022.

He claimed that the accused planned the crime with five others who are still at large: Peter Ben, Idris Wada alias Coker, Ogbu Patricia nicknamed Lamba, Michael Babatunde aka Orija, Bolaji Sobande aka Barrister Onifade, and Michael Babatunde.

The prosecutor testified before the court that the defendant conspired with other people still at large to steal N128 million from businessman Esomonu Everest under the pretense that they had dollars to sell.

Ogunsakin was also charged with using the N128 million for personal gain.

Agwu charged the policeman with violating Section 8(a), which is punishable under Section 1(3)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14 of 2006 and Section 15(2)(b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, as amended in 2012. The policeman entered a not-guilty plea, and the prosecutor requested a trial date and requested that the defendant be remanded in custody pending the outcome of the case.

The prosecutor requested a trial date after the defendant entered a not-guilty plea and urged the court to remand the defendant awaiting the outcome of the case.

Kole Bello, his attorney, did not object to the prosecutor’s request.

The hearing was therefore postponed till July 19 by Justice Aneke’s order that the defendant be kept in the care of the Nigerian Correctional Center.
